Quality of Food
Should be balanced from nutritional point of view
Proper amount of essential elements should be present
All foods should be free of health hazards, especially
stable/ radioactive toxic elements that cause illness
What is
Food Safety
•
Contaminated
food: It can carry harmful parasites, toxins, chemicals, and physical
contaminants.
•
Food
safety: It is a scientific discipline involves the safe handling of food from
the time it is grown, packaged, distributed, and prepared to prevent foodborne
illnesses.
Key
Principles
The five
key principles of food hygiene, according to WHO, are:
- Prevent contaminating food with
pathogens spreading from people, pets, and pests.
- Separate raw and cooked foods
to prevent contaminating the cooked foods.
- Cook foods for the appropriate
length of time and at the appropriate temperature to kill pathogens.
- Store food at the proper
temperature.
- Use safe water and raw
materials.
Food
Security
•
Most
people are familiar with the terms "national security" or "home
security," but relatively few are familiar with the term "food
security“.
•
According
to 1996 World Food Summit, food security means that all people have enough to
eat at all times to be healthy and active, and do not have to fear that the
situation will change in the future. As a concept it can be applied at many
levels—global, national, household, and individual.
